Individually, students are encouraged to help by donating to organizations such as Catholic Relief Services and Help Haiti Foundation. This can be done via text, where a monetary donation is charged to the phone owner's bill.

Faculty members are determined to not only help this country, but take it as an educational opportunity, hoping to inform students of both Haitian culture, and the effects of poverty.

"I hope and pray that we will use this tragedy to walk," said Father Chris DeGiovine, Dean of Spiritual Life at The College, "and not just now and not just to Haiti, but always and for all who suffer injustice in our world full of talent and riches." Fr. Chris has been continuously compassionate to people and places in need, facilitating student participation.

In the past, Saint Rose students have gone on service trips, put on seminars that dealt with poverty and homelessness, and raised money for local, national, and international causes. Reach Out Saint Rose is a day sponsored by the Campus Ministry that gives students the chance to work with local agencies that assist the poor. Many Saint Rose students responded to the Katrina disaster in New Orleans, and continue to visit during their spring break. Every May, students have the opportunity to volunteer in Honduras, in orphanages and schools that house children with mental and physical disabilities.

"Saint Rose students are great and have always been very generous with their time and their resources," said Fr. Chris, who now invites students to "think about how we can help change this intolerable world system that allows such inequity an injustice."

"Please join me in offering our thoughts and prayers to the thousands of victims of this terrible tragedy," said President Sullivan, in a memorandum sent out to the Saint Rose Community on January 15, urging all recipients to support this cause. The email suggests ways to donate and participate in campus events, including guest lecturers belonging to the Capital Region Haitian community, describing the personal effects this earthquake has had.

With the help of Saint Rose student Carolyn Zimmer, Louissaint hopes to venture off campus to raise awareness and collect donations. Together, they have created a Facebook page, "Saint Rose Supports Haiti," to keep students informed of the country's current state, and suggest ways to offer help.

"I am so proud to be Haitian, so proud of my country and my people," said Louissaint. "Even when facing our lowest moments, I will always love Haiti and have the highest expectations."

She concluded an email with the phrase, "L'Union Fait La Force," which translates to "Unity Makes Strength," words that resonate in all of Louissaint's efforts to help her country.

It really is a very tragic thing that happened - it's up to us and the rest of the world to help Haiti rebuild its nation.
