On Wednesday January 13, 2010, at around 7 p.m. two men were shot inside a Pine Hills residence located on the outskirts of the Saint Rose campus. Detectives from the Albany Police Department have reason to believe that this shooting was burglary related, and the victims were not chosen at random. Both of the victims were transported to Albany Medical Center, and their injuries are not to be considered life threatening.
Police say the two men were visiting a female friend's apartment on Ontario Street at the time of the shooting. They told police there was a knock at the door, and opened it to find five men, all wearing masks, armed with a shotgun, and a handgun. After pushing their way inside to the apartment they ordered the victims, the two men and woman, to the ground. They then shot the two males, and fled the apartment on foot. Further investigation is being pursued for the specific intent of the suspects.
Matthew Philpot, 21, of Schenectady, suffered shots to the abdomen and groin area. Wednesday evening he underwent surgery, and is currently in recovery.
Jonathan Dobbins, 19, of Albany, also suffered two shots, one to the arm and another in the leg. No surgery was needed, but treatment and medical needs were provided in the emergency room.
In a press release issued by the Albany Police Department, Deputy Chief Steven Krokoff states, "We are sensitive to the concerns of the residents in the neighborhood as well as the college student population. We do though feel confident at this time that this was not a random act and all of our available resources are being dedicated to this investigation to arrest the individuals responsible."
Saint Rose took immediate action after being notified of the incident, and put the campus on lock down until further notice. The lock down included the procedure of "Shelter in Place" which restrains anyone from exiting or entering the academic buildings, and residence halls. Everyone was to remain in their classrooms or residences until the search was completed and the Albany Police sounded the "all clear."
