It's mid-January. The snow's been on the ground for over a month now, and it'll stay there for a few more before the mercury starts climbing again. The holidays are officially over, school is back in session, and it gets dark at 5 pm. This is around the time that cabin fever starts to set in, and it isn't pretty.

Let's face it: the urge to sit down on the couch in your sweats and not get back up until April is a strong one right now. But you don't have to let cabin fever drive you nuts this winter. Here are five fun things to do that get you out of the house. Most of them are on the bus line, so you don't have to have a car to get there, and some are even free.

Open Mic Night at the Muddy Cup Every Monday from 8-11 p.m., the Muddy Cup on the corner of Madison and South Main holds open mic night. Sip on some cappuccino and watch local musicians, poets, comedians and other performers entertain you for free. Adventurous types might find themselves wanting to step up to the mic themselves, and they can; anyone can sign up to perform here, usually on the spur of the moment.

Comedy on the Park at Lark Tavern The perfect ending to the weekend is a little more laughter before Monday morning hits. Every Sunday night at 8 p.m., Lark Tavern opens its doors for about 10 amateur comics to perform. The event is free, and the under-21 crowd can get in, since the show is in the back room, away from the bar. Sit with friends at a table and split some nachos while you watch, and you're looking at a full night of food and laughter for just a couple of bucks.

First Friday On the first Friday of each month, Lark Street businesses convert into art galleries and open their doors for the public to check out the newest pieces by local artists. Many also offer entertainment for those that stroll through, whether that be in the form of someone playing a clarinet by the door or a three piece band; a few offer refreshments, too. One gallery actually has free Red Bull at the door. Saint Rose's art building, Picotte Hall, is located on State Street and opens up for a showing of student work as well.
