Hockey: UAlbany, the River Rats, or both Hockey is arguably one of those sports that are much better enjoyed in person than on TV. The energy of a hockey game is intense, and Albany is home to both the UAlbany team, which plays at the Albany Academy Field House, and the Albany River Rats, who play at the Times Union Center. Either game is sure to be a hit, but UAlbany games are cheaper. On the flip side, it's easier to get to the Times Union Center if you don't have a car, so cost and convenience play a part here. Whichever team you choose to watch, it'll be an exciting winter night well spent.

Live Music at Valentines, the Red Square, etc. Albany is full of bands and aspiring artists to suit any taste. Get the full rock show atmosphere at a place like Valentines, where the grungy atmosphere and the intimate size make you feel like you could be in the band if you took about two steps to the right. It's fun and different, and with multiple bands playing in one night, a great opportunity to find new music you might like.
