Mitchell is now considering applying to other law schools including PACE, Syracuse University, and University of Baltimore, where she wants to study international law. In her opinion, the law program at SUNY Albany is broad, whereas other law schools have specific programs in international law and global development.

Mitchell was first attracted to the government aspect of law. As a result, she worked for the Kirsten Gillibrand Campaign, passing out campaign information and interviewing members of the community.

Mitchell also completed an internship downtown at the State Senate working with Senator Joseph Griffo, a Republican from Rome, New York. She was the legislative assistant completing office paperwork and attending committee meetings.

This past summer, Mitchell's main interest in law changed to international law and global development after a trip to South Africa. Mitchell lived with a host family for two months in the village of Uta, which is in one of the most impoverished areas of South Africa. Mitchell traveled with a Washington based program known as the Student Movement for Real Change. While in Africa, Mitchell worked on the Assets Based Community Development Model (ABCD Model) which builds community development. The Student Movement for Real Change took the communities' ideas and assets and worked to implement them into South African society. Mitchell taught eighth and twelfth grade English. She also helped run a daycare for the younger kids based on education and fun, and she monitored and evaluated past projects of students in this program.

"Natalie's leadership and communication skills made her a stand out intern. She constantly challenged others working with her to meet a higher standard of excellence and proved to be a vital member to our team," stated Stephen Billy, Mitchell's team leader in the Student Movement for Real Change.

Mitchell's main project in South Africa was "Soccer for a Real Change," a two-day soccer tournament and health day for the South African community. Mitchell was 1 of 4 on the coordinating committee, which also consisted of community members.
