Johnny Mandel originated from Manhattan where he learned to play the trumpet and began writing band arrangements at the age of 12. He landed his first job in the music industry as the teenage member of Joe Venuti's orchestra. His career quickly escalated and Mandel began arranging music for stars like Frank Sinatra and Peggy Lee.
Mandel soon expanded his career and hit it big in the movie scene and composed Jazz scores for popular films such as The Americanization of Emily and M*A*S*H. In 2009, the cherry was added to the top of Mandel's successful career as he was inducted into the ASCAP Jazz Wall of Fame as a Living Legend.
The DIVA Jazz Orchestra that will be performing many of Mandel's compositions is comprised of 15 women who are led by drummer Sherrie Maricle. The DIVA Jazz Orchestra has performed shows in renowned theaters such as Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center.
Ann Hampton Callaway is considered a jack of all trades in the music industry. She is a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, actress, educator, TV host and producer. According to a press release, "her unique singing style blends with jazz and traditional pop", making her a perfect candidate to perform alongside the DIVA Jazz Orchestra while singing compositions written by legend, Johnny Mandel.
Thanks to the College of Saint Rose Premiere Performances II, "Music and Memories - An Evening with the Legendary Johnny Mandel" will feature Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra with vocals by Ann Hampton Callaway.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at www.strose.edu/eventpay. A coffee and dessert reception will follow the performance.
