both the men and women both swept the competition in a dual meet at Le Moyne. Part of this success was contributed by freshman Macky Lloyd, who has had a great start to his collegiate running career.
Lloyd is no newcomer to running, as he has been competing since seventh grade when
he ran the Troy Turkey Trot mile. This sparked his interest in running, which began pursuing it throughout high school. He admits that collegiate running is more intense and serious, but he likes it that way.
"There's no rules to running really," said Lloyd. "It all depends on how hard you work."
During the course of his high school running career, Lloyd made an immediate impact.
During his freshmen year he qualified for the State Championships, where he placed 74th. Lloyd then broke five minutes in the mile during track, with a personal record time of 4:52.
During his Sophomore year, Lloyd once again qualified for 'States' in cross country and improved his mile time to 4:36. Lloyd's junior year was when he really began to shine, where his team won sectionals in Cross Country and competed at the State Championships as a team.
His senior year, Lloyd had his best race at the Sectional Championships, winning the race with a time of 15:52. His team placed third overall at 'States', while he placed 17th. During the track season, he excelled in the two mile with a time of 9:45. The laid back atmosphere and laid back team caught Macky's attention for St Rose after two visits.
"He is by far the top recruited freshman we have ever had," said fellow teammate Pat Cullen. "Not only does he bring his superior ability, but he is very studious."
Upon his arrival at St. Rose, Lloyd wasted no time in making a name for himself, placing 11th overall in the St. Rose Joust and then placing third overall at the Shacklette Invitational. Lloyd then placed first in the LeMoyne dual meet and has won several freshman of the week awards.
"Macky is just a natural athlete," said Cross Country coach Andrew Rickert.
"He was a great basketball player in high school."
Lloyd still has some times he is looking to clip before his cross country career
comes to an end.
"I would really like to break 26 minutes in the 8k and help the team have their best finish ever," Lloyd said.
