Many college students have difficulty balancing their schoolwork with their hobbies. Usually, the fun interests are put to the side in order to complete school tasks. In few cases, students successfully find a balance in their lives

Luckily, Jamie Hopper was able to manage the responsibilities of being a student and a member of the Women's Swimming and Diving team throughout her four years at The College of Saint Rose.

Majoring in Public Communications, Hopper is graduating this May as part of the Saint Rose Class of 2009. Although graduation is a major milestone in her life, she is somewhat afraid of it.

"It is such a tough time in our society today to be graduating and finding a job, especially for those who are already in debt due to student loans," Hopper said. "I plan on attending grad school next year and getting a Master's degree in either broadcast journalism or teaching."

Still unsure of what career she would like to pursue, Hopper plans on being a journalist or a teacher. Last summer, Hopper interned at the local television station, WNYT, and experienced firsthand the multiple jobs of a reporter through shadowing. She also taught a summer class in digital video production for Destination Saint Rose, a program for children in grades six through ten.

"That program was kind of why I wanted to become a teacher," Hopper said.

As an intern at WAMC Northeast Public Radio this semester, she had the opportunity to work with other radio hosts and conduct interviews with various people around the Capital District. She has been working on the three hour long morning show titled "Roundtable." Most recently, she interviewed a chef at a local restaurant to be aired on the Roundtable segment "Culinary Corner."

"I love my internship, I feel like I really found what I want to do with my life," said Hopper. "The only downside to it is that there aren't many job opportunities out there for it."

The Communications department at Saint Rose will lose a large presence when Hopper graduates. Currently, Hopper is the TV Studio Assistant, and also the Treasurer of Upsilon Iota, the Communications Honor Society.
