The Security Office at Saint Rose also offers an escort service to students so they do not have to walk alone to their dorm building or to their vehicles. If students walk alone, especially at night, they are at greater risk of becoming a victim.

"To keep yourself safe, don't be alone because that's when criminals look for opportunity," said Stella.

The crime that most often occurs on campus is larceny. Students often leave dorm rooms unlocked, forget to lock their cars, or leave laptops on a desk in the library.

"My I-pod was stolen about a month ago. I left it in the Events and Athletics Center and went back to get it, and it was gone," said Nicole Dama, a freshman at Saint Rose. "I was walking back to Bru(bacher) a few weeks ago and my wallet fell out of my bag. Someone turned my wallet in to the Security Office, but they took $40 out first".

If this is the worst that happens on campus, students shouldn't worry so much. They should be more worried about walking alone late at night The Security Guards at Saint Rose are here to assist students. The Security officers do not carry guns, but they observe and report which makes them the eyes and ears for the Albany Police Department. Students living in campus might feel secure, but what about the students living off campus?

On October 20th, 2009, SUNY Albany student Richard Bailey was shot in the head while walking home from a friend's house in the Pine Hills neighborhood. The slaying of the SUNY University at Albany student hit close to home with the Saint Rose community. The slaying occurred in the Pine Hills neighborhood, which is just a short walk from Saint Rose. It is suspected that two men were seen riding bikes in the neighborhood around the time Bailey was murdered.

"Ever since the murder of the University at Albany student police have been active in the area," said Jeff Lottermoser, a first year at Albany Law School. Lottermoser feels safer now that the Police are patrolling the area more. He lives two streets down from where Bailey was killed.
