"There is a multitude of free events that happen in the summer, both in the Lake George Village as well as the surrounding communities," said Luisa Craige-Sherman, Executive Director of the Lake George Chamber of Commerce . Events include free concerts, fireworks and Theater in the Park, to art exhibits to nature walks and hikes.
"We have beaches that are accessible for minimal parking fee," said Craige-Sherman. "The State of New York has Million Dollar Beach right at the foot of Lake George. There are bike trails that connect Glens Falls to Lake George, and they include scenic overlooks and historical markers as well as places to get ice cream along the way. There are fantastic hiking trails that run north of Bolton landing and on the East side of the lake, with beautiful views of the Lake George area."
Overlooking Lake George is Prospect Mountain Memorial Highway, which Craige-Sherman personally suggestions for anyone visiting the area. "Go up on top of Prospect Mountain," she said. "There's a small entry fee if you're driving a car, or you can take a hiking trail up. It's a really nice hike, and from the top you can see part of Lake George, the mountains of Vermont, and even down past Saratoga."
Sarah Hamilton, a Saint Rose senior, also admires the views. "You drive up it or walk the trails and there are parking areas and at the very top you can take a shuttle up and see the area. It's really gorgeous!" said Hamilton. "I take a lot of day trips to the area."
Craige-Sherman also encourages them to get out on the water during their stay. "Take a boat cruise or rent a boat on Lake George," she said. "Several companies offer options, and some have theme cruises, like Mardi Gras or Fifties Night." Thursdays in July or August provide a fireworks display over the lake.
For more information, visitors may go to www.lakegeorge.com or contact the Chamber.
When most people think of Saratoga, they think of horse races but the city of "Health, History and Horses" is so much more and only 35 miles from Albany.
