Students, professors and family members of both crowded the Picotte Hall Gallery this past Friday night. The Undergraduate Art Show opening reception attracted art students and those of other majors to downtown Albany.

Many of the pieces from the show leaped out at the viewer, including the poster of the event. Created by junior graphic design major Maria Starin, the poster features juniors Corinne Loperfido, Johnpatrick Reavey, Gale DellaRocco and John Virga leaping forward from Picotte Hall. Since the poster was selected for use, Starin went on to create the postcard and helped to design the gallery checklist and the wall that greets patrons outside of the gallery.

Studio art pieces also leapt out with vivid colors and interesting imagery with some studio art piece constructions reaching out into the third dimension, rising up from the ground or hanging from the ceiling.

The art department at The College of Saint Rose sets up students for great opportunities in the workforce. Graphic design courses have students starting beginning with working projects like mock-up logos and posters for companies like Doritos, or bands like OK Go and Maroon 5, which might be potential clients in their future. Some students use their graphic design skills for local clients. Senior graphic design major Corey Lucik created promotional materials for local band Caleb Lionheart.

Setting up the gallery requires a large amount of work as well. Professor Jeanne Flanagan and her gallery management class were the force behind the scenes. Junior art education and studio art major Kevin Calisto, one of the co-chairs of the management team, described the work that goes on.

"I helped plan and arrange the show with Jeanne and other gallery staff. This includes hanging art work, helping jurors, and setting up for the opening," Calisto said.
