The HEOP (The Higher Education Opportunity Program) and ACCESS Programs are relatively unknown around The College of Saint Rose campus; most people say they never heard the name before. The ACCESS Program was created in order to help students who do not meet the academic standards of Saint Rose. Those students take part in the summer program's pre-freshman year in order to prepare and test them so they may attend the college. The importance and kindness of HEOP/ACCESS and its staff is well known among the many students it has helped over the years.
Natalie Grandy, an Academic Counselor for HEOP/ACCESS has been involved in the program since her freshman year and is greatly appreciated both by students and co-workers. Grandy, age 23, was born in Scotia, NY. She grew up with her parents, three sisters (one of which attends Saint Rose as a freshmen), and her grandmother. Grandy described her grandmother as an "inspiring woman" and said that she was the reason that she decided to go to college.
At a young age she decided that she wanted to become a teacher so that she would be able to help kids. Those dreams lead her to The College of Saint Rose. She entered Saint Rose through the HEOP/ACCESS program and once enrolled in the school became a large part of the program and the college.
Grandy graduated from Saint Rose in 2006 with a Bachelors of Science in Childhood Education and later with a Masters of Education in 2007. She remained as a Secretary for HEOP/ACCESS. As Secretary she sent out letters to possible candidates for the program and filed information on the incoming students. John Francis, the Assistant Director of HEOP/ACCESS described her as a person who "enjoys to contribute." Francis went on to say that she is a great asset because of her many years of involvement in the program and her experience as a former student at the school. This allows her to be more in touch with the problems of the students she is working with.
Over the past year she has been appointed as an Academic Counselor in HEOP/ACCESS. Here she can use her skills as a former student to inform and help current students with their academic dilemmas. She council's students about time management, career planning and academic advisement to ensure academic and personal success.
Jackie Birk is a co-worker with high opinions of Grandy; like Francis she had nothing but positive things to say. Birk described Grandy as "outstanding."
"We are lucky to have her, and I think the students know too," Birk said.
"I definitely plan on staying at Saint Rose, I love it here. I enjoy coming to work each day and love everyone that I work with," Grandy said.
