Thirteen students from the College of Saint Rose took a trip down to Washington D.C. over winter break in order to work with organizations dedicated to curbing the long-standing problems with poverty and homelessness in our nation's capital. The trip was organized by Joan Horgan of Campus Ministry.
In total, the students worked with four different organizations. They include So Others Might Eat (SOME), a non-profit organization that prepares meals, provides clothing and shelter, and assists with job training and counseling for homeless individuals. They also worked with Street Sense, a Washington-based newspaper created and sold by homeless individuals in order to provide income. The group also worked with the Sacred Heart Day Center and the Joseph House, an AIDS hospice.
"I hope they got a different perspective on homelessness on a national level." said Horgan about the students that went on the trip. "The purpose is the transformative process of doing service in a transformative way."
Horgan also hopes that the trip gave the attended students new insight on the problem of poverty that faces our nation.
"What's required goes beyond what feels good,' Horgan said. "We need to meet with government officials about this problem."
Campus Ministry and the College's Community Service Programs are planning several upcoming future trips, including three trips over Spring Break and a trip to Honduras in May.
Interested students should contact Joan Horgan at 454-5296, or Ken Scott at 458-5359.
