Spring semester 2008 is finally here, which means that most students will be looking forward to the days getting longer and warmer as summer approaches. For many seniors, however, it is during these days that their future careers are being shaped through student teaching and internships.
For those seniors who are education majors, it is time for many of them to put what they've learned into practice by student teaching.
Marissa Elbi, a senior secondary education English major, is currently student teaching at her first placement, Koda Middle School.
"So far, my favorite part of student teaching is seeing the faces on the kids when they realize that they understand something," Elbi said. "It means that I did my job right."
Elbi had some advice for the education majors that will be student teaching next year.
"Just keep trying," Elbi said. "Nothing comes easily. Teaching is a lot of work. However, if you prepare and are willing to keep at it, you can achieve all that you wish to."
Many other seniors have chosen to take an internship this last semester to gain more experience in their chosen fields. Senior Georgeanna Hores, a public communications major, will be interning at Baker Public Relations this spring.
"My responsibilities there will be art direction/design, promotional videos for their clients, and any projects they will need further assistance with," Hores said.
Erin McDermott, a senior psychology major, will be interning at the Office of Victim's Services this spring.
"My responsibilities are going to be determining the range of victim's rights according to case records giving information on the offender," McDermott said. While she doesn't know all that she will be doing for her job, she does know that she will use computer information to determine what crime has been committed on a victim, and what the victim's rights are according to that crime-type.
"I think taking an internship is a great way to get a taste of your major in action," Hores said. "After graduation I plan on finding a job involving video editing, maybe even broadcast editing."
