Tuesday evening started one of the greatest events associated with The College of St. Rose Community. The Relay For Life kick-off included food, an open microphone, merchandise for supporters to sport during the actual Relay For Life, which will take place April 25th, and a mock luminary ceremony to get everyone in the community excited and reminded of what's to come.

As for the main event in April, the entire campus courtyard will be filled with many different activities including bounce houses, music, and of course, food. Each team is required to have one person walking at all times, and at dusk, there will be the luminary ceremony to support all individuals who have survived cancer, or who have lost someone to cancer.

Until then, the Relay for Life Committee will set up team captain meetings and tables, with more information, in the Campus Activity Center to help remind the campus the event is just around the corner.

The Relay for Life Committee includes 16 members and 2 co-chairs, however "Relay for Life is for everyone" said co-chair, Joe Pryba. The committee tries to get as many people involved as possible and shows support to all families who have been affected by cancer, inside and outside of the St. Rose community.

This is the fifth year Relay for Life has been a part of St. Rose, and Pryba, who going on his second year on the committee, hopes this year is the "biggest and the best." Last year there was an approximate total of 500 people who participated in the event, and this year there are hopes to be even more.

Aimee Gould, co-chair of the committee, also feels very strongly about the event, "I love this. It's my first year and I cannot imagine St. Rose without it". Both Pryba and Gould completed their undergraduate studies, and are now graduate students here at St. Rose. The two also work for Residence Life, which may be why they are so involved in the committee.

Residence Life encourages all 48 RA's to get involved and two staff members. Many of the residence halls get involved together and create their own team. Each of the teams, whether they are a residence hall or a group of friends supporting one another, can create their own name and will set up different times for members of the group to walk. Each team will have someone walking around the main courtyard at all times, which explains the Relay part of Relay for Life.

For more information, contact Joe Pryba and Aimee Gould, or visit the tables set up in the campus activity center and sign up for your own team.
