Letter reviews security upgrades, other campus news

Issue date: 12/13/06 Section: News

January 8, 2007

Dear Parent and Student:

Please forgive the informality of this salutation but I wanted to get this update to you in a timely fashion before the start of the Spring semester. This is a new initiative that I have embraced in an attempt to keep our students and their parents informed on new programs, events and improvements at Saint Rose. I hope you find this information helpful. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any suggestions.

Security Upgrades

Last October's false allegation of a security breach in Brubacher Hall prompted the College to accelerate its planned upgrades in that building. As part of the second phase installation of the campus-wide card access and security system, new card access points, upgraded perimeter door alarms and cameras will be completed by the time that students return for Spring semester.

Throughout the rest of the campus, an effort to ensure that all exterior doors in all the other residence halls and houses are working properly - and providing the appropriate levels of security - is also nearing completion. More than 50 doors have been repaired, replaced or adjusted to meet a higher standard of operability. While some doors required replacement, most were repaired or had new hardware installed. This task is 85% complete with the balance of the work to be completed shortly.

Finally, the College's Security Department has been permanently relocated to 340 Western Avenue, at the corner of Partridge Street and Western Avenue. This new facility places the Security Department closer to where more of our students live. It is more visible and accessible, and will permit security personnel to be dispatched more readily when assistance is needed. The new offices will also serve as a way station for Albany Police Department patrol officers, which will help to improve the safety of our students as well.

Building Upgrades

During the summer of 2007, the lobby area and first floor lounge in Brubacher Hall will be completely renovated. The area will be substantially upgraded and new furnishings in the lounge will provide a comfortable space for students to study or relax. Work is also underway for major improvements in the laundry facilities in Brubacher. This work will also be completed during Summer 2007.

Near term, the renovations to the Commuter Lounge, also known as the Main Lounge, will be completed by mid-January. The renovations include a complete upgrade of all lighting, flooring, and ceilings, plus a repainting of the walls. New furnishings and seating groups will provide more space for students to relax, study in groups or listen to their iPods in a more comfortable space.
