From day one of college it is emphasized that students get involved and participate in activities that go beyond their classes and homework. Most students take that as an invitation to join anything and proceed to join everything. One girl, Emily Fealey, wasn't the type to follow the crowd. She knew what she wanted right away and pursued things that got her where she needed to be.

Fealey is a local student, from Colonie, a town not 20 minutes from campus. She came to The College of Saint Rose with a clear goal.

"I want to have a job in writing," Fealey said.

Specifically, Fealey wanted to be a journalist. At The College of Saint Rose that meant becoming a Public Communication major. In the Public Communications department students are required to take courses concerning different types of media and practices that occur within the media, such as editing and public relations. It was through this curriculum, and an affiliation with the school paper, that Fealey expanded her career choice.

"As I've gone through working for The Chronicle and Capital Region Living I've realized that I'm interested in the publishing aspect and finishing touches aspect of the whole industry," Fealey said.

It is important to your education to have someone that can help guide your way. The College of Saint Rose has an advisement process in place for this. But that kind of relationship cannot be forced and so students form their own bonds with certain professors; becoming less student and teacher interested in strict education and more of a mentoring program interested in what life can and may hold. Fealey has found that relationship within the Public Communications Department.

"'G Mac', Gary McLouth, I love him," Fealey said. "He's amazing. I think he's one of the smartest people I've ever met and he wears really sweet sweater vests and that's cool."

McLouth echoes Fealey's assessment of their relationship and his pride is evident as he looks back at her career at Saint Rose.
"I have enjoyed and respected her sincere demeanor when she talks about her studies and her work," McLouth said.

Fealey has interned extensively in her college career, starting out as early as her sophomore year.
